neutral oil, for frying
caramel or chocolate sauce, to serve
- Churro dough
1 cup cold water
1 stick unsalted butter
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
- Cinnamon sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 tbsp cinnamon
Directions
- To make the churro dough, add cold water, unsalted butter, salt, and sugar to a medium-sized pot. Place the pot over medium heat and stir until all the ingredients are melted.
- Turn the heat to low then dump in the flour and mix until smooth. Transfer the dough to a bowl to cool. (You don’t want the dough to be hot when you add in the eggs).
- To make the cinnamon sugar coating, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon. Pour the mixture over a large plate and set aside.
- Once the dough has cooled, use a hand mixer to slowly add in the eggs and vanilla extract, making sure everything is well combined and smooth.
- Transfer the dough into a piping back with a star tip, no bigger than 1/2 inch.
- Heat a pot of neutral oil to 375°F. Pipe the churro mixture into the hot oil and cut with scissors at around 6 inches.
- Let fry for 3-4 minutes, flipping as needed to make sure all sides are golden brown. Remove the churros and place on a wire rack to cool slightly.
- Coat the churros in the cinnamon sugar mix and serve with caramel or chocolate sauce.
